Bismarck's diplomacy of Realpolitik and powerful rule at home gained him the nickname the "Iron Chancellor". German unification and its rapid economic growth was the foundation to his foreign policy. He disliked colonialism but reluctantly built an overseas empire when it was demanded by both elite and mass opinion. Juggling a very complex interlocking series of conferences, negotiations and alliances, he used his diplomatic skills to maintain Germany's position.

A master of complex politics at home, Bismarck created the first welfare state in the modern world, with the goal of gaining working class support that might otherwise go to his Socialist enemies. He lost that battle as the Catholics responded by forming the powerful German Centre Party and using universal male suffrage to gain a bloc of seats.

Bismarck then reversed himself, ended the Kulturkampfbroke with the Liberals, imposed protective tariffs, and formed a political alliance with the Centre Party to fight the Socialists. A devout Lutheranhe was loyal to his king, Wilhelm Iwho argued with Bismarck but in the end supported him against the advice of his wife and his heir. While Germany's parliament was elected by universal male suffrage, it did not have much control of government policy.

Bismarck distrusted democracy and ruled through a strong, well-trained bureaucracy with power in the hands of a traditional Junker elite that consisted of the landed nobility in eastern Prussia. He largely controlled domestic and foreign affairs, until he was removed by the young new headstrong Kaiser Wilhelm II.

He retired to write his memoirs. A Junker himself, Bismarck was strong-willed, outspoken and overbearing, but he could also be polite, charming and witty. Occasionally he displayed a violent temper, and he kept his power by melodramatically threatening resignation time and again, which cowed Wilhelm I.

He possessed not only a long-term national and international vision but also the short-term ability to juggle complex developments. Bismarck became a hero to German nationalists ; they built many monuments honoring the founder of the new Reich. Many historians praise him as a visionary who was instrumental in uniting Germany and, once that had been accomplished, kept the peace in Europe through adroit diplomacy.

His father, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Bismarck —was a Junker estate owner and a former Prussian military officer; his mother, Wilhelmine Luise Mencken —was the well educated daughter of a senior government official in Berlin.

Inthe family moved to its Pomeranian estate, Kniephof now KonarzewoPolandnortheast of Stettin now Szczecinin the then-Prussian province of Farther Pomerania. There Bismarck spent his childhood in a bucolic setting. Bismarck had two siblings: his older brother Bernhard — and his younger sister Malwine — The world saw Bismarck as a typical backwoods Prussian Junker, an image that he encouraged by wearing military uniforms.

However, he was well educated and cosmopolitan with a gift for conversation, and knew English, French, Italian, Polish and Russian.

Bismarck was educated at Johann Ernst Plamann 's elementary school, [8] and the Friedrich-Wilhelm and Graues Kloster secondary schools. Inwhile stationed as an army reservist in Greifswaldhe studied agriculture at the University of Greifswald.

Motley, who later became an eminent historian and diplomat while remaining close to Bismarck, wrote a novel inMorton's Hope, or the Memoirs of a Provincialabout life in a German university.

SABATON - Bismarck (Official Lyric Video)

In it he described Bismarck as a reckless and dashing eccentric, but also as an extremely gifted and charming young man. Although Bismarck hoped to become a diplomat, he started his practical training as a lawyer in Aachen and Potsdamand soon resigned, having first placed his career in jeopardy by taking unauthorized leave to pursue two English girls: first Laura Russell, niece of the Duke of Clevelandand then Isabella Loraine-Smith, daughter of a wealthy clergyman.

Under her influence, Bismarck became a Pietist Lutheran, and later recorded that at Marie's deathbed from typhoid he prayed for the first time since his childhood. Their long and happy marriage produced three children: Marie b.Enter your mobile phone to receive SMS alerts for new deals. Experience our area's best businesses at a fraction of the price! Although an arch-conservative, Bismarck introduced progressive reforms—including universal male suffrage and the establishment of the first welfare state—in order to achieve his goals. He manipulated European rivalries to make Germany a world power, but in doing so laid the groundwork for both World Wars.

His father was a fifth-generation Junker a Prussian landowning nobleand his mother came from a family of successful academics and government ministers.

Throughout his life Bismarck would emphasize his rural Junker roots, underplaying his considerable intellect and cosmopolitan outlook. In he married and was sent to Berlin as a delegate to the new Prussian parliament, where he emerged as a reactionary voice against the liberal, anti-autocratic Revolutions of From to Bismarck served a series of ambassadorships—at the German Confederation in Frankfurt, in St.

Though technically deferring to William, in reality Bismarck was in charge, manipulating the king with his intellect and the occasional tantrum while using royal decrees to circumvent the power of elected officials. In Bismarck began the series of wars that would establish Prussian power in Europe.

He attacked Denmark to gain the German-speaking territories of Schleswig-Holstein and two years later provoked Emperor Franz-Josef I into starting the Austro-Prussian Warwhich ended in a swift defeat for the aging Austrian empire.

At the time, Bismarck wisely declined to levy a war indemnity against the Austrians. Bismarck was less circumspect in his conduct of the Franco-Prussian War The French declared war, but the Prussians and their German allies won handily. Prussia levied an indemnity, annexed the French border provinces of Alsace and Lorraine and crowned William emperor of a unified Germany the Second Reich in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles—a tremendous insult to the French.

With Germany unified, William I and Bismarck turned to entrenching their domestic power. In Bismarck relented, allying with the Catholics against the growing socialist threat. In the new king forced Bismarck out. Respected and honored by the time of his death eight years later, Bismarck quickly became a quasi-mythic figure invoked by political leaders calling for strong German leadership—or for war. Work was completed in Augustwhen she was commissioned into the German fleet. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power.

The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugenwhich then damaged Prince of Wales and forced her retreat.

Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits to force an end to the raiding mission. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was severely damaged during a sustained engagement with two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, was scuttled by her crew, and sank with heavy loss of life.

Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June by Robert Ballardand has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions. The two Bismarck -class battleships were designed in the mids by the German Kriegsmarine as a counter to French naval expansion, specifically the two Richelieu -class battleships France had started in The standard crew numbered officers and 1, enlisted men. The first six divisions were assigned to the ship's armament, divisions one to four for the main and secondary batteries and five and six manning anti-aircraft guns.

The seventh division consisted of specialists, including cooks and carpenters, and the eighth division consisted of ammunition handlers. The radio operatorssignalmen, and quartermasters were assigned to the ninth division. The last three divisions were the engine room personnel.

When Bismarck left port, fleet staff, prize crewsand war correspondents increased the crew complement to over 2, men. Bismarck also carried four Arado Ar reconnaissance floatplaneswith a single large hangar and a double-ended catapult. Adolf Hitler made the christening speech. On 15 Septemberthree weeks after commissioning, Bismarck left Hamburg to begin sea trials in Kiel Bay.

As the ship's stability and manoeuvrability were being tested, a flaw in her design was discovered. When attempting to steer the ship solely through altering propeller revolutions, the crew learned that Bismarck could be kept on course only with great difficulty.

Even with the outboard screws running at full power in opposite directions, they generated only a slight turning ability. The tests proved she was a very stable gun platform.

The ship was scheduled to return to Kiel on 24 Januarybut a merchant vessel had been sunk in the Kiel Canal and prevented use of the waterway.
